What is Biotensegrity?

It’s easy to think of the mechanics of the human body in the fragmented sense—a collection of bones and muscles, independent of each other, all with their own jobs to do. But humans, and all living things, are much more than just the sum of their parts.

Biotensegrity is a structural design principle that describes the relationship between every part of the organism and the complex mechanical system that integrates them into a complete functional unit. These mechanics are rooted in the idea of that although separate, our bones, skin, muscles, and connective tissues are all interconnected, working together to make up the complex cellular matrix of our bodies.

This underlying principle of biotensegrity is causing a paradigm shift in the way we think about functional anatomy. The body is no longer understood to be a load-bearing structure that transfers weight from one bone to the next; instead, our bones float within the tension structure of the body, allowing forces to instead flow through our entire fascial network.

How do we translate it into our method?

By recognizing and understanding these connections and working to maintain them.

The human body is a structure made up of integrated tensions, with complex networks that weave through every muscle and organ to hold us together and help us function. We use this understanding of the body’s architecture, and the communication systems that reside within its networks, to trace these tensional forces through the body and target the problem areas that require attention. We unlock functional movement, allowing bones to resettle, thus promoting better alignment, better mobility, and relief from pain.

Change happens through movement and movement heals.
